Montel Williams (the talk show host) went ballistic on a high school student during an interview at some healthcare fair. He was asked “If he thought pharmaceutical companies would be discouraged from research and development if their profits were restricted”
Sounds pretty like a legitimate and appropriate question for this particular interview right? He immediately became visibly upset and questioned the young lady’s integrity and presence, then asked her if she had anyone who was sick or in need of medication. He was so peeved by the question that halfway through his rant he double snapped his fingers and announced the interview was over.
Now you would think that this would have been the end... but their encounter has yet to reach its crescendo. Apparently later that evening the teenager had another run in with Montel when she was at hotel for a function (Montel was incidentally a guest there). They saw each other in the lobby, Montel recognized her from the earlier interview, he walked over and confronted her (against the advice of his body-guards) and proceeded to rant that he was a big star; he will find where she lives and BLOW HER UP!
This doesn’t sound real right? I didn’t believe it and had to look this up. Well, sad to say it is! “How old is Montel, is he like 12 or something?” How could a 50-something year old man hurl such a juvenile threat towards a teenager. I say juvenile because we know he didn’t literally mean it. Has he gone mad? Now he is asking for her to appear on his show so that he that can apologize. She wisely declined.
Now it seems to me that lately celebrities have lost the ability to behave responsibly in public. Well let’s just say that he felt that there was an ulterior motive behind her question and she really was a legitimate reporter (she does look older). He is an articulate man and could have handled the question with the finesse of a public figure (I know he is capable of this). Not to mention when he later saw her at the hotel—why not have hotel security and/or his body-guards handle a possible stalking situation (which I think that’s how he may have felt). He is right---- he is famous, and famous people dumb behavior becomes equally famous!
Currently the young lady has retained an attorney and he is possible facing charges on “terrorist threat” (because he used the term “blow up”) which is a felony in the State of Georgia where the incident occurred.
What was he thinking?
